If you spend $30 on an oil change in your car, you will save $3,000 or more on a new engine. Proper preventive maintenance of your HVAC equipment can save you much more than that!
If you’re like most people, chances are two of your biggest concerns are your health and your finances. In the house, your HVAC system can have a significant impact in both of these areas. People often don’t realize that their heating and cooling equipment can be the culprit behind irritating allergies and costly utility bills. The key to preventing both is regular maintenance.
One simple step you can’t afford to ignore
The single most important thing you can do to secure your air conditioning and heating system between their seasonal tune-ups is to change the air filters frequently.
Maintenance isn’t expensive compared to what you might need to spend if your system degrades, and ultimately, fails. Your air filters are important to keep the coils and heat exchanges on the heating and air conditioning systems as clean as possible. The dirtier your filters are, the harder the unit has to work to pull air through your home, resulting in eventual mechanical failure which can be expensive to repair.
Save $$ on utility bills
According to EnergyStar.gov, “A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool — wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system — leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure.” The energy savings alone can more than pay for your home’s air conditioner filters.
How often should you change your air filter?
Simply put, you should change your air filter when it’s dirty. General guidelines are not applicable to everyone, however. If you have light to moderate allergies, you may need to upgrade the air filter and change them even more regularly than OEM specifications.
If you have pets in the home, you’ll need to change your air filters even more frequently. Animals have a tendency to shed, which can clog your air filter fast. Clearly, the air filter is just doing its job by capturing pet hair and dander, but dirty filters can cause weak HVAC performance. (Ask us about recommended air purifiers!)
